The art of optical design with computer assistance has two basic components. First, the designer must be able to determine a suitable starting design, and second, he or she must play the role of supervisor during the optimization process. A good supervisor knows when and how to back up and coax the program into a more fruitful direction.

Unfortunately, this often requires considerable experience, and even more often, excessive tedium. An experienced designer uses a combination of intuition, analysis, and luck in searching for new, better, design forms. 
      


The conical and free form optical reflectors originate from planar reflective materials with >98% reflectivity. By utilizing natural surface bends against a precision form the resultant shape closely matches the original optical design. So you end up with a reflector that is within a tolerance (typically 1-2 material thickness) of your intended shape (spherical, parabolic, aspheric, CPC, etc.). We can even match your current reflector but with 98% light output.

We will try to provide you the simplest approach that will meet your optical needs. Often our creativity will seem obvious in hindsight.
